About SERVE ONE MINISTRIES

Vision of Serve One Ministries

Serve One Ministries began like most great movements do- People seeing a need, then meeting that need. Several years ago, Scott and Staci Huggins, while on a vacation with family in a small beach community in Costa Rica encountered more than just the sun, surf and sand. They encountered people in need. People that needed the leadership of someone or some organization to come along side them and partner with them in community and spiritual development.  It was on that trip that the Huggins’ found their lives profoundly transformed by God calling them into service, inspiring them to seek out a way to provide life change to others, in both North America and Costa Rica, the vision for Serve One Ministries was birthed.

Serve One exists to provide the people of churches, communities, and families a bridge to people in need, a way to answer the calling to serve and to give and to make a difference in God’s kingdom.

“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”  James 1:22

As Scott and Staci began to share this vision, a number of people and organizations surfaced who felt such a calling and were looking for a way to fulfill it. With these people, they began to wonder what might happen if a new concept of missions was presented, one with a very clear and innovative direction that was captivating enough to capture thousands of people.

What If?

We began to wonder what if?

  • An organization was created that leveraged its relationships with hundreds of thousands of people who were educated and challenged to make a difference in one country at a time, like Costa Rica?
  • A committed network of churches, communities and organizations decided to focus on key issues and adopt communities in Costa Rica?
  • Those churches partnered with communities in Costa Rica such that they might meet and work together to discover and address the needs of that community?
  • Those with a heart for Costa Rica had a relevant and exciting outlet that provided the means for them to actually put their passion into action?
  • The people involved in this, could address the issues of the present while providing a hope for not only this life but for the eternity beyond?

Could we move the needle in that one country in such a way that the rest of the world would take notice and ask, “What happened there? Why is that country different?”…….Imagine.

 Serve One Mission Strategy

It is our hope that with Serve One, organizations will find a freshly innovative take on the concept of missions. In partnering with Serve One, organizations find themselves with a very accessible way to actually go and serve, not just once, but by building a lifelong relationship. When a church or organization commits its time and resources to another village or community and travels there to know the people, to live with them for a while, to help in meeting their greatest needs, then it is no longer just a mission; it’s a relationship. In partnering with Serve One, you are opening the door to life-changing, culture-changing relationships.

Serve One core tenets are to identify, develop and partner with local indigenous community leadership.

We learned quickly that we can only be as effective as the leaders we work with.  Another core principle is to “enable the self-developing capabilities of the people we serve.”  In order to do that, we’re careful not to do for Costa Rican communities what they can do for themselves. Said another way… we will measure our success not by what we do, but by what they do for themselves. That, in our view, is true development.

This strategy extends through the deployment of the 5 impact areas for every community.

  • Health
  • Housing
  • Education
  • Micro-Enterprise
  • Spiritual Development

At Serve One, we believe that our personal relationship with God is directly proportionate to our service to His people. “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.  A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37-39

He has commanded us to use what is given to us to serve His people, and this command is the core of our organization. Our staff is comprised of people who recognize God’s call to service and who want to answer that call by using their gifts to minister to others. “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” 1 Peter 4:10

We share a heart for the communities of Costa Rica and a passion to build lasting relationships with the people we encounter there in an effort to help spur them on to change.  “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13

We believe that a network of committed churches and organizations partnering with communities and villages in Costa Rica can make a difference. We believe that this focused, single country approach will not only change the lives of God’s children in Costa Rica, but also transform the hearts and minds of the church through service to His Kingdom.
